Short Bio
Robert Ross is a New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee and a two time New York Music Award winner for Best Live Blues Artist. Robert also won an East Coast Rocker Award for Best Blues Artist in 1991. The singer, songwriter, guitarist, slide guitarist, & harmonica player is known for a wide variety of blues, jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, and other roots music. Robert worked and recorded with Big Joe Turner for Spivey Records & for Doc Pomus. He also worked with Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Brownie McGhee, Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Rush, Dr. John, J.B. Hutto, Victoria Spivey, Louisiana Red, Eddie Kirkland, Floyd Jones, Homesick James, Bobby Lewis, Pinetop Perkins, Charles & Cyrille Neville, David "Honey Boy" Edwards, Linda Hopkins, Wilbert Harrison, & Champion Jack Dupree. One of Ross' songs was recorded and released twice by Johnny Winter. Two other originals appeared on ABC TV's daytime drama "All My Children". The Robert Ross Band has toured Europe and North America. Ross has performed at numerous festivals including the Chicago Blues Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival, and is a perennial at the Riverhead Blues Festival on Long Island. The Robert Ross Band has released 7 internationally distributed cds. Ross performs as a solo (acoustic or electric), as a duo, with The Robert Ross Band and with a new group called The BluesManian Devils.

Hi everyone!

First, I’d like to send a shout out to all the places where we are not playing this month --

Ohio, Indiana, & Iowa — nothing on the horizon yet, but we never go too long without a midwestern tour taking shape!

Paris — a family trip will take us to France in early May. Il ya quel qu’on en cette belle endroit qui voudrais offrir un concert du maison?

Maryland — I’ll be joined with the full “Rosetta Trio” (featuring Stephan Crump, Jamie Fox plus Liberty Ellman; now making a fantastic tour in Europe) for a private house concert on June 2nd near Baltimore. Please let me know if you are in the vicinity and would like us to pay a visit to your living room or neighborhood venue that weekend..

New England/Atlantic Canada — We’ll be doing our now traditional August tour up to Nova Scotia and back, and hope to see you in Rhode Island, upstate NY, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and/or New Brunswick..

Where we are playing is in and around NYC: This Thursday 2/2 will have me returning to my old home base in Greenwich Village, The Bitter End, for a duo show with one of the first musicians here that I admired from afar (and now near), electric bassist Kevin Jenkins. I’ll see if I can get Kevin to contribute his luscious backing vocals too, for a few songs on our 1/2 hour set opening up for old friends Burlap to Cashmere. By Tuesday 2/7 my regular trio-mates will have returned, and we will head up to Westchester County to play the Watercolor Café on Larchmont. Come for dinner and catch an opening set by Garry Novikoff!

We have two Valentines-themed shows the following weekend in Brooklyn, for which we will be pulling all the love songs out of the archives. The tiny, wonderful Barbés in Park Slope will be the place on Friday, February 10th, and then on the 11th we host our own benefit house concert for art programs at my son Maceo’s school. PS9! PS9! The gorgeous Pyeng Threadgill will also be pulling out the romance on that one.

Speaking of the greatest love (“justice is what love looks like in public” -- Cornel West), I’ll leave you with a tragically relevant call to action from Martin Luther King, taken from his 4/4/67 speech at Riverside Church in NYC.

...If we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered. A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies...

True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that the edifice that produces beggars needs restructuring.

ROBERT ROSS wins NY MUSIC AWARD for Best Live & will be inducted into NY BLUES HALL OF FAME

2011 has been a pretty incredible year for Robert Ross. He will be inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame on December 4th, and he won his second New York Music Award for Best Live Blues Artist. The other blues artists to win this year were Cyndi Lauper and Mose Allison. Ross won his first New York Music Award for Best Blues Artist in 1989 and has been nominated a total of 7 times over the years alongside such stars as Johnny Copeland, Taj Mahal, John Hammond Jr., and Roscoe Gordon. Robert also won an East Coast Rocker Award for Best Blues Artist in 1991. He has also been nominated 7 times over the years along with the likes of John Hammond, Johnny Copeland, Taj Mahal, and Roscoe Gordon. The singer, songwriter, guitarist, slide guitarist, & harmonica player is known for a wide variety of blues, jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, and other roots music. Robert worked and recorded with Big Joe Turner for Spivey Records & for Doc Pomus. He also worked with Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Brownie McGhee, Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Rush, Dr. John, J.B. Hutto, Victoria Spivey, Louisiana Red, Eddie Kirkland, Floyd Jones, Homesick James, Bobby Lewis, Pinetop Perkins, Charles & Cyrille Neville, David "Honey Boy" Edwards, Linda Hopkins, Wilbert Harrison, & Champion Jack Dupree. One of Ross' songs was recorded and released twice by Johnny Winter. Two other originals appeared on ABC TV's daytime drama "All My Children". The Robert Ross Band has toured Europe and North America. About Matt Andersen MATT ANDERSEN: Breaking Through, One Audience at a Time The best performing songwriters, the ones who sound like they really mean what they’re singing about, tend to come from areas known for hard times and hard work. Like say, Perth-Andover, a rural blue-collar village in the Canadian Maritime province of New Brunswick—the home of acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist Matt Andersen. “Perth-Andover’s a really small, family-oriented community,” says Matt. “Everybody knows everybody. My dad’s worked as a logger pretty much his whole life. But there’s always been music around: My grandfather played fiddle, my mom plays piano in church. Most of my cousins have had bands at some point. Whenever there’s a get-together there’s always about nine or ten fiddles or guitars in the room.” Matt’s musical household got him interested playing early on and by junior high he was in the school band, first on tuba and later on trumpet. He took up guitar at 14, and before long was playing classic rock and Top 40 covers in pub bands while he studied studio engineering. Things changed dramatically, however, when he discovered the blues. “Through Eric Clapton I got into B.B. King, which led me to the Chicago electric stuff and eventually back to the Mississippi Delta guys,” says the 30-year-old singer. “What really hit me most about the blues was its total honesty.” Matt began to build his name on the Canadian circuit, his imposing voice and slashing slide guitar making a monolithic impression on audiences. He debuted with 2002’s One Size Never Fits, and followed with the likewise-warmly received Solo at Session (2004) and Live at Liberty House (2005). After playing the prestigious 2004 East Coast Music Awards, Matt continued cultivating crowds, appearing with Randy Bachman, Bo Diddley, Little Feat, America, Loverboy, April Wine, and others. He signed with Busted Flat Records for a string of exalted albums: 2007’s Second Time Around, 2008’s Something in Between, and 2009’s Piggyback (a duo set with harmonica king Mike Stevens) and Live at the Phoenix Theatre. By 2009 Matt had become a frequent guest on Stuart McLean’s CBC radio show “The Vinyl Café” and had completed his fourth tour of the UK, where The Times called him “Canada’s greatest guitarist.” In 2010 he became the first Canadian to win Memphis’s famed International Blues Challenge, which led to festival dates in France, Italy, and the US, where he toured with Old Crow Medicine Show. Matt’s newest album, Coal Mining Blues, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people: There’s the self-explanatory “Work Hard for the Luxury,” and the moving title track, which rings true in mining communities from Cape Breton to Sheffield and West Virginia. But not all of Coal Mining Blues is about hard work, as rollicking up-tempo cuts like “Lay it on the Line” and “Fired Up” bear out. Ross won his first New York Music Award for Best Blues Artist in 1989 and has been nominated a total of 7 times over the years alongside such stars as Johnny Copeland, Taj Mahal, John Hammond Jr., and Roscoe Gordon. Robert also won an East Coast Rocker Award for Best Blues Artist in 1991. He has also been nominated 7 times over the years along with the likes of John Hammond, Johnny Copeland, Taj Mahal, and Roscoe Gordon. The singer, songwriter, guitarist, slide guitarist, & harmonica player is known for a wide variety of blues, jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, and other roots music. Robert worked and recorded with Big Joe Turner for Spivey Records & for Doc Pomus. He also worked with Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Brownie McGhee, Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Rush, Dr. John, J.B. Hutto, Victoria Spivey, Louisiana Red, Eddie Kirkland, Floyd Jones, Homesick James, Bobby Lewis, Pinetop Perkins, Charles & Cyrille Neville, David "Honey Boy" Edwards, Linda Hopkins, Wilbert Harrison, & Champion Jack Dupree. One of Ross' songs was recorded and released twice by Johnny Winter. Two other originals appeared on ABC TV's daytime drama "All My Children". The Robert Ross Band has toured Europe and North America. Ross has performed at numerous festivals including the Chicago Blues Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival, and is a perennial at the Riverhead Blues Festival on Long Island. The Robert Ross Band has released 7 internationally distributed cds. Ross performs as a solo (acoustic or electric), as a duo, with The Robert Ross Band and with a new group called The BluesManian Devils.
